Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur-linked Antonio Conte is planning to stay at Inter Milan – but only if there’s a ‘winning project’ at San Siro.

Conte is reported by Corriere dello Sport to have met with Tottenham over replacing Jose Mourinho in North London.

But that report is a few weeks old now and there hasn’t been much speculation about him joining Spurs since.

His future at Inter seems in doubt amid the Italian champions’ financial issues, which could stop them from mounting a realistic title defence next season.

And Romano has told The Benchwarmers‘ website that he’ll only stay with the Nerazurri if it’s evident to him that his can defend their Serie A crown.

He said: “In Italy, Inter will have a meeting with Antonio Conte to understand his ambitions: Conte wants to stay but only in the event that the club has a winning project.”

From a Tottenham perspective, Conte is as good as it gets.

We’re talking about a manager who has won five top-flight league titles during his career – including one with Chelsea in 2017.

More to the point, he’s seven years younger than Mourinho and therefore his methods may be more conducive to success than Mourinho’s, with some criticising the Portuguese coach’s outdated philosophy.

Leaving Inter is definitely on the cards because, as mentioned, they have major money worries. But with the Real Madrid job up for grabs, there’s no guarantees Tottenham will get their man.
