Alex Ferguson has admitted that he really thought Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli was going to be a ‘top player’.

It is no secret that Alli has endured perhaps his worst season as a Tottenham player.

The 25-year-old spent most of the season on the periphery of things under former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who was sacked in April.

But even before Mourinho’s arrival in North London, Alli was struggling to replicate the sort of form he showed during his early years under Mauricio Pochettino.

Mourinho is on record as saying that Ferguson raved about the England international to him during his time as Manchester United boss.

But he hasn’t developed a great deal over the past two or three years.

Here’s what Ferguson told Lad Bible on YouTube: “I thought Dele Alli was going to be a top player, I must admit. I don’t know what’s happened there.”

It goes without saying that an on-form Dele Alli is truly something spectacular but it’s been a while since he was able to reach those heights.

Pochettino is Paris Saint-Germain coach now and it was reported in January that the Argentine wanted him in the French capital, though a loan move never materialised.

But with the summer transfer window about to open, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if speculation about a Pochettino-Alli reunion surfaced again.
