Rangers winger Glenn Middleton brought his loan spell at St Johnstone to an end this afternoon with a surprise start in the historic Scottish Cup final win over Hibs – and Gers fans on Twitter were impressed by the winger.
The Ibrox winger has struggled to get regular starts for Callum Davidson’s side but has made some important contributions as they secured fifth place in the league before today’s final triumph made the Saints the first side outwith the Old Firm to win a domestic cup double since Aberdeen in 1990.
Middleton scored a stunning free-kick in the semi-final win over St. Mirren and after the Perth side were hit by a number of complications caused by Covid, the Scotland under-21 star was handed a start at Hampden this afternoon.
He had a good chance to open the scoring after 16 minutes, jinking his way through the Hibs defence but getting the shot all wrong as he scuffed his shot at goal.
The Saints did take the lead after 30 minutes, Shaun Rooney heading home from David Wotherspoon’s cross and leaving Callum Davidson’s side on the brink of a famous Cup double.
With the Saints looking fairly comfortable, Middleton was handed the chance to make it 2-0 and seal the win for the Perth side but saw his penalty impressively saved by Matt Macey.
His afternoon was brought to an end a few minutes later, being replaced by ex-Ger Michael O’Halloran but it was a shift that impressed watching Rangers fans.
The winger was a regular in the Gers squad in Steven Gerrard’s first season at the club but has barely been involved with the first-team in the last two years.
Middleton is due to return to Ibrox this summer and some fans thinks Gers boss Steven Gerrard should give him a chance to win a regular place in the first-team squad.
