Sheffield United are interested in signing Blackburn Rovers’ Championship star Joe Rothwell with just one year left on the midfielder’s contract, as reported by Lancs Live.
When playing at his very best, there are few players in the second-tier more exciting than the one-time Manchester United youngster.
Watching Rothwell slice apart an opposition backline with one of those trademark winding runs is truly is a breathtaking sight. The only problem is, one of the Championship’s most technically-gifted footballers is also one of the most frustrating.
Rothwell has scored just seven goals in over 100 league games for Blackburn – with just three of those coming in 2020/21.
So if the 26-year-old does swap Ewood Park for Bramall Lane during the summer transfer window, Sheffield United will be expecting him to add a much-needed ruthless streak to an otherwise impressive skillset.
Lancs Live report that the Blades’ recruitment team have identified Rothwell as the kind of addition they need, as the club looks to adapt to life back in the Championship following their bottom-place Premier League finish.

Rothwell would certainly add speed, skill and unpredictability to a Sheffield United side who have scored just 19 goals in 37 matches this term, while potentially filling a Sander Berge-shaped hole in the club’s midfield.
“I love to see him picking it up deep, running past men, breaking lines… you can see the fear in the eyes of the centre halves as he breaks past midfield,” Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray said recently.
