Hertha Berlin have tied Matheus Cunha to a new contract only one day after Calciomercato linked Leeds United with a move for the £25 million Bundesliga forward.

Well, that didn’t last long.

Last night, reports emerged out of Italy suggesting Cunha was a £25 million summer transfer target not only for Marcelo Bielsa’s great entertainers but also Serie A sides Napoli and Atalanta.

But Hertha, one of the most ambitious and deep-pocketed clubs in German football, aren’t going to be bullied.

Cunha already had a contract until 2024 at the Olympiastadion. But Hertha have wasted no time in extending the forward’s deal by a further 12 months.

“I can confirm we have extended Matheus Cunha’s contract,” said Arne Friedrich, the club’s sporting director, via Get German Football News.

“We sat down with Matheus and came to the agreement we’re extending his contract for another year.”

That doesn’t mean Cunha is destined to ply his trade in the German capital next season, however.

As BILD points out, Hertha may still be willing to cash in on the former RB Leipzig youngster. But they will now demand far more than the mooted £25 million for a fleet-footed Brazilian who shot to fame with a stunning solo goal against Bayer Leverkusen in 2019.

Did Hertha extend Cunha’s contract to secure his services for the next four years? Or to ensure, if they do cash in, they can command a huge profit on their initial £15 million investment?
