Is Spiral: From the Book of Saw 2 confirmed? Let’s get the 2021 movie’s sequel potential explored and consider its current status. SPOILER WARNING!

Are you ready to play another game?

A number of notable horror movies emerged back in 2004, but arguably none felt as colossal and impactful as James Wan’s Saw.

It was one of the most discussed movies of the year and a sequel inevitably surfaced a year later. And the next year, and the next, and the next…

After the arrival of the seventh – and supposedly final – instalment with 2010’s Saw 3D, many believed the franchise would finally lay dormant for quite some time, and perhaps seven years was a while; for Saw fans, anyway.

Jigsaw in 2017 brought the franchise back from the dead with lashings of gore and wince-inducing traps, but Spiral: From the Book of Saw teased a back-to-basics approach that was favoured by the first instalment.

Placing less emhpahsis on the torture-porn appeal of the sequels, Darren Lynn Bousman’s latest – the ninth in the franchise – has brought the series full circle in many ways, but will he get to continue the tale with Spiral: From the Book of Saw 2?

Is Spiral: From the Book of Saw 2 confirmed?

  • A sequel to Spiral: From the Book of Saw is yet to be confirmed. However, the film’s director has suggested that another movie may be on the cards.

Speaking with Gamesradar, Darren addressed the ending and how he hopes it will leave audiences eager to see more:

“… you want to leave them wanting more. And I think that that, to me, is a cool thing. And also, if there is more, and hopefully fans respond, they’ll get to see what happens after that scene.”

While the critical reception has perhaps been disappointing, many general audiences and fans of the franchise have praised the direction of the film and would surely be happy to see another installment greenlit.

The film’s box office will likely play a crucial role in whether a new installment is confirmed too. Reportedly, the film had a budget of $20 million, and although this may seem expensive in contrast to previous entries, it’s difficult to imagine Spiral escaping a satisfying profit.

How does 2021’s Spiral set up a sequel?

WARNING: SPOILERS

Then, of course, there is the question of whether Spiral exhibits the potential for a sequel. The answer is a resounding yes, as you’ll know after witnessing the film’s explosive ending.

In the final act, it’s revealed that Zeke’s (Chris Rock) former partner and rookie cop, Det. William Schenk (Max Minghella) has been behind the string of killings. He faked his death by tattooing the same tattoo he had on another body.

He aims to tackle police corruption, left scarred after the murder of his father at the hands of an officer, who was also Zeke’s old partner.

Zeke is given a choice to let the corrupt officers die and join Schenk, but he ultimately decides to save their lives. Nevertheless, his attempts are in vain and a trap ensures that Zeke’s father (Samuel L. Jackson) is gunned down by the cops. We learn that he was Schenk’s main target all along.

The ending establishes Schenk as the new Jigsaw killer and the murder of Zeke’s father gives our protagonist a greater motive than ever to hunt down the antagonist. Potential for a sequel couldn’t be clearer.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw is now in cinemas.

In other news, Yellowstone is expected to return in June.
