‘Time traveler’ spotted at Mike Tyson’s 1995 fight

In September 2015, footage from one of Mike Tyson’s fights was posted on YouTube by a channel called JammyBantam who titled the video: “Unexplained Time Traveller Seen at Mike Tyson Fight!!!”

In the clip, you can see someone in the audience is using a device that looks like a smartphone to film Mike Tyson fighting.

But that’s pretty normal, right? People always film at sporting events? Well, that’s where things get weird.

The footage is from a fight that took place in 1995, which was way before smartphones even existed! In the description, JammyBantam wrote:

“1995 fight between Mike Tyson and Peter McNeeley in Las Vegas. Someone in the crowd is seen taking a picture from what appears to a smart phone device, or a device way ahead of the 90’s. Aliens!!!”

“I dunno if it’s a time traveller or not, but no one can explain what camera it is; a QV-100 doesn’t have a silver bit on the right, and this camera doesn’t seem to have a black line under the lens,” they continued.

The video got a huge 8.7 million views, and the time traveler theory went viral on the internet.

Now, six years later, it’s resurfaced, and is taking over social media once again.

The ‘time traveler’ video debunked

Upon first glance, it definitely does look like a smartphone, which is pretty creepy. However, the time traveler conspiracy is unsurprisingly completely false.

People quickly began realising that no one else in the audience was reacting to the device, which means it must have been a pretty common piece of tech in 1995.

Snopes did a little digging and found that the device is actually a type of camera that was widely available at the time.

“Although the photographic device seen here does resemble a type of camera phone not sold until several years after 1995, it also resembles any one of a number of handheld cameras that were in fact widely available in 1995.”

It’s difficult to work out exactly what camera theman is using, but some similar ones are the Casio QV-10A and Logitech Fotoman.

So, there wasn’t actually a time traveler at the 1995 Tyson-McNeeley fight. The conspiracy was fun while it lasted!
