Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to express their annoyance at how Steve Bruce reacted after hearing Harry Kane wants to leave Tottenham.
🗣"I did ask Harry himself when he came up here if he fancied the number 9 jersey." 🤣— Football Daily (@footballdaily) May 18, 2021

The Magpies boss chose to joke about luring the man with 165 Premier League goals to Tyneside.
Bruce even added that he asked Kane if he fancied wearing Newcastle’s famous No.9 shirt.
Some fans below felt that was a bit disrespectful to Joelinton, who currently owns the No.9 shirt at St James’ Park.
In our view, the outcry below is a bit over the top.
We completely understand that Newcastle fans want to see their manager be a bit more ambitious.
After all, there were days where the Magpies would be a potential destination for a player like Kane.
However, there’s not really much wrong with Bruce’s answer.
Plenty of Premier League managers up and down the country were being asked about Kane today.
It’s always difficult for managers to answer questions about players from other clubs – it can often be viewed as disrespectful.
Bruce choosing to make light of what is a tough situation for Tottenham was a reasonable response – the Newcastle fans below are certainly exaggerating somewhat.
Let’s see what they’ve had to say about Bruce’s reaction…
Steve Bruce making light of the fact Kane isn’t a realistic target for #NUFC. Now I’m not saying he is. Not at all. But to joke about it shows how detached this guy is from the fans.— Toon Polls (@ToonPolls) May 18, 2021
I want a manager who has ambition and dreams about being the best, not one who laughs about it. pic.twitter.com/GbNLQmKsNb
Love that he mentioned the number 9 jersey as if it was available. “Here ya Joe just give us that shirt as Harry is on his way” Good old Brucey! Boosting morale since 1995— Rich Jobling (@jobling_rich) May 18, 2021
Sure big J9 was buzzing about you offering his shirt!— Norman Dempsey (@NormanDempsey5) May 18, 2021

Joelinton must be delighted to hear that. 😂— Scrounge (@Arm_of_Scrounge) May 18, 2021
Every press conference. He can’t get through a single one without embarrassing the club. Not that long ago we tried to sign players like Kane, now our manager just jokes about it. 🤦♂️pic.twitter.com/xtnNmwbLuH— Tom Chaplin (@MrTomChaplin) May 18, 2021
