Southampton legend Lawrie McMenemy has bid farewell to “top class” Ryan Bertrand as the reported Arsenal and Leicester City target prepares to leave St Mary’s, speaking to the Daily Echo.

When Goal reported in January that the 19-time England international was reluctant to extend his contract on the South Coast, a burning desire to play European football at the latter stages of his career was said to be a key factor.

A Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012, Bertrand has barely kicked a ball in continental competition since.

But, if a seat at Europe’s top table is what the 31-year-old wants more than anything, you’d imagine Leicester would be his preferred destination.

The Standard reports Arsenal are keen to take Bertrand back to London. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, want to sign a player who made his England debut under Roy Hodgson years ago.

Should FA Cup winners Leicester defeat Chelsea again this week, they will all but secure a Champions League berth. A prospective move to the King Power, then, would be difficult for Bertrand to turn down.

But wherever he ends up, the long-serving defender will go with the good grace of most at Southampton – including one of the club’s most influential figures.

“First of all, thank you for the seven years, 240 games and the top-class effort and ability you have shown,” says McMenemy, who spent 12 years in the Saints’ dugout.

“But the puzzle I have is did he really want to move on at 31? Was he offered a contract by the club? If so, when? Was he disappointed by an offer?

“But I’m sure, judging by his comments, he really enjoyed his time here. He hasn’t criticised the club at all.

“It could be that having sat with his agent… you’d think this would be his last move at the top level.

“I’m sure there will be clubs queueing up and, bearing in mind he’ll be a free transfer, his pension will undoubtedly be topped up because whoever he signs for won’t be paying a transfer fee. His contract will probably be the best he’s had.

“So, thank you for your time here Ryan and good luck for the future.”

After Manchester City and AC Milan expressed their interest, Southampton confirmed last week that Bertrand will go when his £70,000-a-week contract expires in July.
