The Athletic has reported today (4:06pm UK time) that David Luiz will leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

The report has claimed that Luiz has told Arsenal that he will leave when his contract runs out this summer.

This means that there will be a space in manager Mikel Arteta’s squad for a defender.

William Saliba must be rubbing his hands right now.

That’s because Luiz’s reported exit would open the door for the 20-year-old to try to make an impact again at Arsenal.

The France Under-20 international defender could not make an impact in the first half of this season.

The youngster did not make a single appearance in the Premier League and went on loan to Nice in the January transfer window.

Saliba is scheduled to return to the Gunners from his loan spell at the end of the season.

When the youngster was sent out on loan in January, Luiz was an important player in the team.

Arteta could let Saliba leave on loan because he could afford it.

Now, with Luiz reportedly leaving, the Spaniard would have a fewer option at the back.

This could allow Saliba to get more of a look-in than he did last summer.

Of course, the France Under-20 international would have to work hard in pre-season training, but at least he would have a better chance now.

During his loan spell at Nice, Saliba has made 18 appearances in Ligue 1.
