According to The Times, Andros Townsend is likely to leave Crystal Palace as a free agent, with Newcastle keeping an eye on his situation.

It was the Chronicle who revealed that Newcastle are keeping tabs on the 29-year-old, as they keep an close eye on the free agent market.

West Brom’s Kyle Bartley and Sheffield United’s John Lundstram were also mentioned by the Chronicle.

Now, if The Times are to be trusted, Townsend is set to become available for nothing with Crystal Palace unlikely to offer him a new deal.

This news should be of interest to the Magpies for a multitude of reasons.

Firstly, he is a target for Steve Bruce, as aforesaid. Secondly, Townsend is someone Newcastle know well, as he played for the club in 2015/16.

Also, the Walthamstow-born winger is a player of great experience.

Townsend has made a whopping 240 appearances in the Premier League, while he has also earned 13 caps for England.

As far as free agents go, there probably won’t be many better options out there this summer than the Crystal Palace No.10.

Sadly, he has endured a tough season at Selhurst Park, scoring just one goal in 31 Premier League appearances this season.

However, when he’s on his game, he is a fine player – Newcastle fans know that all too well.

On a free, he’s certainly worth bringing to Tyneside.
