Southampton’s finest performance in months must have made painful viewing for Tottenham Hotspur fans.
And not just because Danny Ings, scorer of two brilliantly taken goals in the 3-1 triumph over Crystal Palace, looks set to snub Spurs in favour of a new contract at St Mary’s.
The right-back spot has been a problem position all season in north London.
And, just three days after Serge Aurier was torn limb from limb by a rampaging Jack Harrison at Elland Road, Kyle Walker-Peters offered another cruel reminder of Tottenham’s £10 million transfer blunder.
It’s not as though there were no warning signs.
‘KWP’ had impressed during a loan spell on the South Coast in the second half of 2019/20. But, rather than bring the academy graduate back to the capital, Tottenham opted to sell Walker-Peters to Southampton instead, replacing him with the now out of favour Matt Doherty.
“I am sure Spurs are thinking, ‘With the right-back problems we have, we wish we had (Walker-Peters,’” Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports in late April.
“So there have been a few mistakes (at Tottenham).”
Those “mistakes” were exposed once more last night as Walker-Peters produced yet another performance full of energy, industry and no shortage of quality.
Tottenham’s loss has undoubtedly been Southampton’s gain.
