Micah Richards has said on Sky Sports Premier League (8:01pm, May 8, 2021) that it is not fair to judge Liverpool defender Rhys Williams now.

The former Manchester City defender, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that it is too early to judge the Liverpool youngster.

The Englishman has pointed out that the England Under-21 international was thrown in at the deep end, and has said that he is a cracking young player.

Richards said on Sky Sports Premier League (8:01pm, May 8, 2021): “I think it’s not fair to judge him so soon. He has also been thrown in at the deep end. Sometimes you sink, sometimes you swim, but you just need a late more time. I think he is a cracking young player.”

Williams has come through the Liverpool academy and has made appearances for the first team this season.

The 20-year-old defender has made three starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League and made three starts and three substitute appearances in the Champions League this season.

The youngster also played twice in the FA Cup and featured in two Carabao Cup matches.

The youngster had a difficult game against Manchester United earlier in the season, but he did well against Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend.

After the match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised the youngster and outlined the advice he has given to him.

Klopp said on Sky Sports News (10:41pm, May 8, 2021): “We told Rhys, you have a good long ball so use it from time to time.”

Williams was playing for Kidderminster Harriers last season, and it is a big step up to turn out for Liverpool in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The England Under-21 international is still developing and progressing as a footballer.

After all, Williams is only 20. It is not easy for any player of that age to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

The youngster needs time.
