As we commemorate VE Day on its 76th anniversary, find out whether the Red Arrows are making their return to the skies.

This Saturday, May 8th 2021 will mark the 76 years since Victory in Europe during the Second World War. Given that the previous year had Brits celebrating the day in lockdown, we’re sure that this year will see the celebrations amped up.

Whether you’re donning the home-made bunting or making an Eccles cake, there are all kinds of traditions on VE Day to get involved with. But are the Red Arrows from the Royal Air Force making their celebratory flight across the UK?

Will the Red Arrows fly for VE Day 2021?

No. It is thought that the Red Arrows will not be taking to the skies for VE Day 2021.

Currently, the Red Arrows are stationed in Greece for their pre-season overseas training. This training period is called Exercise Springhawk 2021.

It is a five-week exercise to ensure the safety and professionalism of the Red Arrows display.

Last year saw the Red Arrows’ VE Day route take them across Great Britain. On the official UK Aviation website, they wrote:

“The Red Arrows are due to leave their base at RAF Scampton at 08:37 before transiting down the east coast of England in order reach Westminster at 09:10 for a flypast across the capital should also include the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The Reds then return to RAF Scampton just after 9:30.”

When will the Red Arrows fly their next route?

As of yet, the RAF have not confirmed when the Red Arrows will return to business-as-usual.

On the RAF website, they write: “Locations where the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team will display in 2021 are yet-to-be released.”

“Dates and displays are subject to change, due to operational, weather and other factors, right up to the show time itself. Exact display times are released towards the actual date of performances.”

They are expected to remain in Greece through the end of May 2021.

VE Day celebrations for 2021 explored

As lockdown restrictions largely remain in place, celebrations will not take place as usual. Many events marking VE Day 2021 will still be held online.

Among them is the RAF Association charity. The charity will host online VE celebrations on its Facebook page on Saturday, May 8th from 10am, including a low-impact fitness session, a virtual quiz and a singalong.

The day will also see Care for Veterans invite runners to take part in a 10k virtual challenge on VE Day to raise funds to support the charity.
