Florian Thauvin is set to make a shock switch to Mexico with Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Crystal Palace missing out on the World Cup winner, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

When looking at all the potential destinations for the out-of-contract France international, it’s fair to say Monterrey was way down the list.

Thauvin had been linked with some of Italy’s biggest clubs – with TMW reporting AC Milan had been in talks for a number of months – while plenty of Premier League teams were also showing an interest despite Thauvin’s disastrous spell at Newcastle United under Steve McClaren.

In March, L’Equipe reported Crystal Palace and Leicester had held talks with Thauvin.

Tottenham were in the race too, with the London giants apparently identifying the left-footed right winger as a potential replacement for Real Madrid loanee Gareth Bale (Estadio Deportivo).

But, according to TWM, Thauvin is set to leave Europe behind and make a move no-one saw coming.

The 28-year-old is about to sign a five-year deal with Mexican outfit Tigres with this most unexpected of switches expected to be confirmed within the next few days.

It remains to be seen whether Tigres are willing to pay the £100,000 a week Thauvin wants, however.

Thauvin will be reunited with former Marseille teammate Andre-Pierre Gignac, the 35-year-old striker who has become a living legend in Mexico after scoring 149 goals in 260 games.
