Arsenal have real hope that defender David Luiz will play again this season.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who suggest that the Brazilian may be able to feature in Arsenal’s end-of-season run-in – which could yet include a Europa League final.

Luiz has only just returned from injury, but was substituted on 53 minutes during Sunday’s 2-0 win at Newcastle United, with Calum Chambers coming on.

A hamstring injury looked to have ended Luiz’s season and potentially his Arsenal career, given that he is out of contract this summer and may be allowed to go.

The injury sustained isn’t thought to be serious, though whether he is fit to face Villarreal in Thursday’s crucial Europa League semi-final second leg remains to be seen.

The 34-year-old is valuable leader at Arsenal, and Mikel Arteta would surely want to have him around for the final weeks of the season.

Ultimately though, this latest injury blow is exactly why Luiz may be let go this summer. He has only managed 17 league starts this season, and has only played six times since the end of February.

Arsenal aren’t in a position to be giving out considerable contracts to ageing, injury-prone players, and Luiz sadly comes into that category now.

It’s sad to say, but this may be the end for Luiz in the Premier League. He may come back this season, he may fight his way back to play for Arsenal again this season, but the end feels nigh.

Let’s hope Luiz can enjoy one last big moment with Arsenal, possibly with a Europa League final win if everything works out as Arteta would like.
