Paul Robinson told Sky Sports News that Dele Alli ‘looked strong’ on Sunday and he feels the Tottenham midfielder has ‘bulked up’.
Alli was one of the players who was hardly selected by Jose Mourinho, but under Ryan Mason, he started Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Sheffield United from the weekend.
Whilst the England international didn’t get on the scoresheet, he looked lively in the middle of the park, dropping deep to dictate play and also making his typical late runs into the penalty area.
Ex-Spurs keeper Robinson thinks Alli has been in the gym of late, as he was impressed by what he produced against the Premier League’s relegated club.
“He looked fit and he looked strong,” said Robinson. “It looks like he has been in the gym and it looks like he has bulked up.
“And he doesn’t look like he was struggling when he came off (v Sheffield United). Obviously, he hasn’t had a lot of minutes under his belt this season.
“But he looked really well. He played in a free role behind Harry Kane and he’s dropped deep to link play.
“I think the biggest compliment you can pay Dele Alli is that he has kept his head down during all this speculation about him potentially leaving and him not getting on with Mourinho. He’s got his head down and he has worked hard.”
With Mourinho now out of the door, it will be interesting to see if that means that Alli will now stay put in North London.
Many would have perhaps backed him to leave had Mourinho still been at the club, but it seems as though he is now back in Tottenham’s first-team picture.
In truth, Alli’s form dipped way before Mourinho arrived, so this isn’t a case of Jose has now left and the Englishman will be back to his best.
A lot more is still needed by Alli himself and there’s no better way to end the season than to help Spurs finish in the top four.
