Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has been waxing-lyrical about Kyle Walker-Peters, dubbing Southampton’s move to sign him from Tottenham as a steal.

The right-back joined the Saints on a permanent deal in the summer, and he’s only gone from strength to strength since joining the south-coast outfit.

Shearer believes that Southampton got a great deal for Walker-Peters.

“Turning our attention to Southampton, we’re going to take a look at Kyle Walker-Peters. Southampton have had a mixed season so far, but Walker-Peters has been pretty consistent, registering the most tackles of any player in the team. He’s amongst the league leaders in tackles won,” Shearer said.

“Going forward he’s had less success, but when you look at his defensive qualities you can really see his value.”

The ex-Newcastle striker then answered a comment from a fan, who claimed that Walker-Peters was a fantastic signing.

“Billy Pulman reckons Walker-Peters to Southampton was a steal. As a long-term investment I have to agree there. A reported £12m for someone who could be at the club for 10 years or more was great business I think, and I back Walker-Peters to keep getting better.”

Shearer may be right here.

At just £12m, Walker-Peters looks like a great signing for Southampton, and his performances since joining Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side has left Tottenham with egg on their faces.

Consider how many problems the right-back position has cause Tottenham this season, and this move starts to look poor.

Shearer is right, Walker-Peters was a steal for the Saints, and Spurs should have gotten a bigger fee for him.
