On Tuesday, April 20th the jury at Hennepin County Court found Chauvin guilty on three counts for the death of Floyd: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
George Floyd died on May 25th 2020 at the hands of Chauvin. His death sparked protests around the world and a renewed focus on police brutality and America’s criminal justice system.
Who is Derek Chauvin’s ex-wife?
Derek Chauvin was married to Kellie May Xiong Chauvin from June 2010 to February 2021.
Kellie explained there was “an irretrievable breakdown” in her marriage when filing for divorce just five days after George Floyd’s death in May 2020.
She petitioned for divorce in May 2020 and it was granted by a judge in February 2021.
In a public statement released by her lawyers, Kellie Chauvin said “her utmost sympathy lies with [George Floyd’s] family.” They continued to “respectfully request that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy” amid the divorce proceedings.
Kellie Chauvin’s background explored
Kellie was born in Laos in 1974, in the middle of wartime. This led her family to flee to Thailand in 1977 for their safety. The family lived in a refugee camp for three years before moving to Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
At the age of 17, Kellie’s parents arranged her first marriage. She had two children with her first husband. They were married for ten years, but Kellie filed for divorce as a result of her husband’s abusive nature. He passed away shortly after their divorce. Kellie and the children moved to Minnesota.
While living in Minnesota, Kellie Chauvin earned her associate’s degree in radiology. She later took an internship in the emergency room of Hennepin County Medical Centre in Minneapolis, landing a full-time position after. Kellie worked at the Hennepin County Medical Centre for the following thirteen years. This is where she met Derek Chauvin.
She currently works in real estate in Minnesota.

In October 2018, Kellie Chauvin was crowned United States of America’s Mrs. Minnesota. She went on to compete in Las Vegas for the national title in February 2019.
Kellie was the first-ever Hmong woman to win the Minnesota title.
