Fans of actor Simu Liu, are wondering if the star has had training in martial arts. After the trailer for Marvel’s new movie shows off his skill set.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is an upcoming Marvel movie based on a comic by the same name, which first appeared in December 1973, in Special marvel Edition issue 15.
A trailer for the film was released on 19th April 2021 which shows Simu Liu as the leading character Shang-Chi ‘Master of Kung-Fu’ in which Liu is seen engaging in martial arts. Fans are wondering if Liu can do martial arts in real life.

The film was originally set to begin development in 2001 but was never created even though a production crew started coming together in the early 2000s. In 2006 Shang-Chi was one of many chosen to be a part of Marvel’s new deal with Paramount, meaning a film was on the horizon at this point.
In 2018 is when fans first caught wind of the development of the film with David Callaham chosen to write the screenplay. In 2019 Destin Daniel Cretton became the film’s director and later that year Simu Liu was announced to be the lead.
The film was set to release earlier this year in February 2021. However, the pandemic delayed the release and the new release date is set for 3rd September 2021. You can watch the full trailer below.
Simu Liu’s martial arts experience explained

Simu Liu joined the cast of Shang-Chi, taking on the role of the ‘Master of Kung-Fu’ with experience in martial arts, he can be seen messing around on his social media accounts where he shoots a choreographed fight with fellow martial artists/actors. He is said to have experience within the areas of Taekwondo and Wing-Chun.
Not only is Liu thought to be trained in martial arts but he is known to be athletic. It has been noted that he engages in “basketball, volleyball, gymnastics” among other sports. Though he has never commented on just how extensive his experience is, he regularly posts on his social media, in videos that showcase his abilities. He is also a fan of Martial artist and actor, Jackie Chan. Fans are hoping to see more of his skill set in the upcoming movie.
Simu Liu personal life and filmography explored
Simu Liu was born on 19th April 1989, in Harbin, China. However, he moved to Canada at the age of 5 and was raised there, in Ontario. Liu does not have any siblings and is an only child.
Liu graduated in 2011 from the University of Western Ontario, with a degree in Honours Business Administration. Following this, he worked in his field of study as an accountant until being fired from his job. Liu’s first role as an actor was as an extra in Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific rim’, which released in 2013. He went on to be credited in 37 roles and is most well known for his appearances in ‘Kim’s Convenience’ (2016-2021) and ‘Taken’ (2017).
His upcoming roles include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Post-Production) and ‘Arthur the King’, which is currently filming with no known release date. Liu is now known as the first-ever Asian lead to star in a Marvel film as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will also feature Asian stars such as Awkwafina ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018) and Michelle Yeoh ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ (2000).
Vanity Fair state “Shang-Chi is a superhero film that’s years in the making. After 24 previous MCU movies, it will be the first to center on an Asian protagonist”. Fans are excited to see what the film will bring to the MCU later this year, as they are expecting big things.
