Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily Podcast, BBC Sport reporter Darren Fletcher has shared what he knows about Liverpool’s summer transfer budget.

Fletcher is of course well-connected within the game, working for both BT Sport and BBC as a broadcaster and reporter, so he is usually rather knowledgeable about these things.

He was having a discussion about Liverpool’s transfers when he was asked about how much they can spend in the summer, to which he replied:

“Well, listen I don’t know, I don’t sit in the Liverpool boardroom, but people close to the club tell me that there’s not a great deal of money to spend on players. At the moment, the focus is on redeveloping the ground.”

The show’s co-host then chimed in with his response.

“That means he knows there’s no money JJ. He knows there’s no money, Fletch doesn’t say that without knowing, he’s had the nod hasn’t he?” Fletcher’s co-host said.

Fletcher then returned to his initial point.

“They’re generating money to try and redevelop Anfield and that is going to impact what they’re going to do in the transfer market, and they might need to be a bit more creative.”

This is certainly interesting to hear, and it’s a conflicting report to the one we had earlier this week from James Pearce who claims there will be money to spend.

Whether or not Liverpool do spend big in the summer remains to be seen, but everything they’re doing seems to be shrouded in mystery.

Depending on who you believe, the Reds could either be in for a busy summer or a quiet window.
