Where is Frank of Ireland filmed? Let’s consider the filming locations of the 2021 series now on Channel 4 and streaming on Prime in the US.
Plenty of new shows have made their way to audiences in 2021 so far, and no matter your genre, there’s something for you.
If you enjoy a good comedy then chances are you’re quite taken with Frank of Ireland.
This brand new series began airing on Channel 4 on Thursday, April 15th and was made available on Amazon Prime Video in the US, Canada, and Australia the following day.
It was co-written by Brian and Domnhall Gleeson, who both star as Frank and Doofus, respectively. Frank is a 34-year-old musician living at home and grappling with a mid-life crisis, but after his mum intervenes, his ex-girlfriend and best-friend help turn things around for him.
Now, where is Frank of Ireland filmed?
Where is Frank of Ireland filmed?
- Frank of Ireland was mostly filmed in Dublin, capital of the Republic of Ireland, while some of the shoot also took place in Belfast.
Bustle notes that Dublin is the Gleeson brothers’ hometown and the story is set there, so venturing there to film was essentially a no-brainer.
Speaking with Channel 4, Domhnall explained that there was a point in which they were asked to film exclusively in Belfast, “because there’s lots of different exterior elements that we could use in place for Dublin.”
However, he revealed that “Brian had been amazing about sticking to [their] guns saying, ‘no, we want it to really feel like Dublin’.”
So, the majority of exterior sequences were captured in the capital and Malahide, north of Dublin, where the co-writers and stars grew up. Although some scenes were ultimately shot in Belfast, not enough of the project was filmed in Northern Ireland’s capital to take away from the authenticity of the show, taking its setting into consideration.
Domhnall also shared some more insight into the shoot during the aforementioned interview:
“We got to shoot with an Irish and Northern Irish crew and nearly all Irish actors around us. We got to really feel like we were filming at home. And even for us with the family element of it, it was also nice having Brian in Dublin. Shooting at home, it was a treat.”
