Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Deja Vu’ meaning explored

Ahead of her debut album which is due to be released in May, Olivia Rodrigo has just dropped her second single Deja Vu, and it seems to have a very similar meaning to Drivers License.

In Driver’s License, Olivia sang about a boyfriend who moved on with someone else, and Deja Vu appears to follow the same theme.

The lyrics talk about an ex-boyfriend doing the same things with a new girlfriend as they did with her, such as “car rides in Malibu”, eating “strawberry ice cream” and “trading jackets”.

So, who is the song about?

Who is ‘Deja Vu’ about?

Olivia Rodrigo has never revealed who any of her songs are about, but fans are convinced that Deja Vu is a follow on from Drivers Licence.

When Drivers License was released, fans speculated that it was about Olivia Rodrigo’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett and singer Sabrina Carpenter.

People thought the song was about Olivia’s failed relationship and breakup with Joshua before he moved on with Sabrine Carpenter. However, Olivia never confirmed whether this was true.

In fact, we don’t know if Olivia and Joshua ever even dated at all, but they had been romantically linked on many occasions.

Now, fans think that Deja Vu could be about the same thing, which means it’s about Joshua and Sabrina doing things in their relationship that Olivia and Joshua did together.

However, this is just a theory, and we’re about to debunk it once and for all.

Sabrina said the song is “fictional”

Fans continue to speculate that Deja Vu is about Sabrina Carpenter, but Olivia shut down the rumours and confirmed that the track is actually fictional.

She sat down with her producer Dan Nigro and filmed an interview with Rolling Stone where she spoke about Deja Vu and revealed that they wrote the song together in August 2020.

Olivia and Dan discussed exactly how they created the fictional plot which they thought would be so relatable for a lot of different people.

So, Deja Vu isn’t actually about anyone. But that certainly won’t stop fans from speculating!
