Writing in his mailbag on The Athletic, Phil Hay has delivered an update on Leeds United’s plan to expand Elland Road.
The Whites outlined their desire to increase the stadium’s capacity at their centenary celebrations back in 2019, but here we are, almost two years down the line and we’re yet to see construction begin.
We’ve not had an update on this for a while, but luckily, Hay says that Leeds are still working on this idea.
“My understanding is that Leeds are a long way down the road in terms of finalising plans for the West Stand and North Stand (and finding backers to help fund the work).
“They’re looking at a capacity of around 55,000 and given that they’re staying up this season, it might not be long before we see some blueprints. It would be done in stages to make sure attendances don’t drop too low while work is going on but in a revenue sense, it’s the area where Leeds can make significant strides financially,” Hay wrote.

It’s great to hear that these plans are in motion.
Of course, it would have made sense if Leeds had to throw the brakes on this development after such a turbulent year financially, but it seems as though they’re still pushing ahead.
The stadium development won’t matter all that much until fans are allowed back in the grounds, but with the return of supporters being just a matter of weeks away, we can start thinking about the idea of 55,000 in a packed out Elland Road watching Premier League football.
