Phil Hay has suggested to the Athletic’s Youtube channel that claims that Liverpool are interested in Leeds United’s Raphinha are wide of the mark.

It had been claimed in the Daily Mirror that Liverpool were interested in landing the £17 million Brazilian (BBC Sport) last month, as he has enjoyed a hugely impressive first season at Leeds.

But the well-connected Athletic journalist says that the last time he checked the rumours out with his Leeds sources, he was told there was nothing in them.

“In terms of Raphinha the last time I asked about him there had been no contact of note. For all the links to the various clubs, particularly the top four in England, there was nothing behind it,” he said.

“But you have to be sensible enough to know it all depends this on who bids what and when they bid.”

That update will surely come as a relief to Leeds supporters, but it could be a frustration for Liverpool fans.

Raphinha has proven his class this term after putting together a quite simply brilliant first season in English football.

He would be a majorly exciting addition to Liverpool’s attack, but Leeds are under no pressure to sell.

The Whites are not in any relegation or financial trouble, and one of their main aims will surely be to keep their key players around this summer.
