Where is Gardner Museum’s Richard Abath now? Let’s explore the 2021 Netflix documentary, This Is a Robbery.
Netflix prides itself on delivering subscribers a wealth of content, offering everything from exciting blockbusters to arthouse dramas.
There is something for everyone, but if you’re a documentary fan, you may find a little more to appreciate on the streaming service than most.
Many lovers of non-fiction entertainment have declared Netflix an essential for its output, and this year has already delivered such efforts as Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer and beyond.
One of the latest to demand attention is This is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist, a four-part series which explores the 1990 theft of 13 art pieces from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
Two men entered the premises wearing police disguises, leaving with $500 million worth of property. No arrests were made and the documentary considers those involved. So, who is Gardner Museum’s Richard Abath?
Gardner Museum: Who is Richard Abath?
Richard Abath was the 23-year-old security guard who was working at the Gardner Museum at the time of the robbery.
As noted by The Cinemaholic, he was part of a band called Ukiah and a self-described hippie. He dropped out of Berklee School of Music and attended two semesters at the Maryland Institute of Art, taking on night shifts at the museum.
Richard openly admitted that he didn’t necessarily care for the job and he was investigated by the FBI after the theft occurred. He explained that two men in cop uniforms arrived on-site in response to a disturbance, so he allowed them in.
When approaching Richard, he says they told him to step out from his desk citing a warrant they may have had against him. The men then grabbed him and taped up his face to obscure his vision, proceeding to handcuff him in the basement.
The documentary includes that the building’s motion detectors confirm that Richard was the last person to enter the gallery from which art went missing, rather than the two men. Although, some say the technology wasn’t exactly very reliable at the time.
Now, let’s consider where Richard Abath is today…
This Is a Robbery: Where is Richard Abath now?
Considering Richard’s life after the 1990 theft, he moved to Vermont in 1999 and graduated college in 2010 before landing a job as a teacher’s aide in Brattleboro.
Now in his 50s, he is actually writing a book about his life in regards to the Gardner Museum heist, with Pandora’s Laughter currently serving as the working title.
Reflecting on the course of his life, he explains:
“I don’t want to be remembered for this alone. I’d like to be remembered for the good things I’ve done. I’m a husband, a father of two really cool kids. But they’re saying it’s half a billion worth of artwork… It’s the kind of thing most people don’t have to learn to cope with. It’s like doing penance. It’s always there.”
He once added: “I seem to be the only one who’s not trying to [solve this case]. And that mainly comes down to: I’m glad to be alive.”
The Cinemaholic acknowledges that officials have long suspected Richard played a role in the theft, but he has never been charged in connection with it. Additionally, he claims he passed the FBI’s lie detector tests when probed about the incident.
This Is a Robbery is now streaming on Netflix.
