Leeds United are interested in signing England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window, as reported by the Express & Star.
How on earth do we judge Ilan Meslier’s debut top-flight season?
For every stunning reflex save clawed off the line like Superman in goalkeeping gloves, there have been more than a few high-profile blunders.
Crosses into the box appear to be the Frenchman’s Kryptonite, with Leeds’ problems from set-pieces becoming the stuff of parody.
Then again, only one man in the Premier League has made more saves than Meslier in 2020/21.
And it just so happens the man in question, West Brom’s Johnstone, may be battling the 21-year-old former Lorient youngster for a place in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI next term.
The Express & Star reports Leeds are interested in the one-time Manchester United youngster, with Johnstone expected to leave the Baggies when their relegation is confirmed.
West Brom won’t stand in Johnstone’s way, with the gifted shot-stopper hoping to avoid a return to the Championship. He knows, deep down, playing second-tier football will scupper his chances of a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
The Athletic backs up these claims and states the £10 million-rated Johnstone is determined to go, with Tottenham Hotspur at the front of the queue.
Leeds’ interest, meanwhile, appears to suggest Kiko Casilla’s tumultuous spell at Elland Road is coming to an end.
