Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League tonight, and there is a surprise in the lineup.
The starting XI is pretty much as you’d expect; key names like Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all start.
The big shock comes on the bench, as Harvey Davies has been named as a substitute at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.
Davies isn’t a household name, and some may be wondering just who he is – even if he’s unlikely to play a single minute tonight.
Davies, 17, will serve as Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper tonight, with Alisson starting and Adrian on the bench.
The teenager has been coming up through the Liverpool ranks, and was born on Merseyside, meaning tonight will mean even more to him as a Scouse lad through and through.
Davies has been with Liverpool since joining at Under-9 level, but has yet to even make his Premier League 2 debut for the Reds.
He has been on the bench in the Champions League before – against RB Leipzig in the home leg last month – but being named against Real is a totally different matter.
With Caoimhin Kelleher out, Davies has been called upon tonight, and this is just the next step for him in his development.
Eventually, Under-23 games will come for Davies, and who knows – maybe he will be a first-team regular for Liverpool in the future.
