Tottenham Hotspur simply must sign a new centre back this summer, as their current options simply aren’t good enough to consistently challenge for the top four.
Eric Dier has suffered a difficult season, Toby Alderweireld is now 32, Davinson Sanchez is too inconsistent and Joe Rodon can’t hold the defence up on his own, meaning he needs help.
A number of names have been linked with Spurs ahead of the summer window, and Football.London claim that Joachim Andersen is one of the players being heavily considered.
The Dane has been shining on loan at Fulham this season, and it seems likely that Lyon will cash in this summer by selling him on to another club – possibly Tottenham.
Lyon paid a huge €30million to sign the Dane from Sampdoria in 2019, and his form in England may now mean that they can recoup a huge chunk of that back this summer.
If Spurs fans needed another verdict on Andersen, then Fulham legend Tony Gale has offered one that Tottenham fans should be very, very encouraged.
Gale told Fulham’s official website earlier this season that he thinks Anderson is a leader, praising him as ‘absolutely sensational’ whilst suggesting that he is Fulham’s best defender since Brede Hangeland – huge praise from Gale, who couldn’t speak highly enough of the new Spurs target.
“It doesn’t seem fair to single any one player out for praise after a win like that, but Joachim Andersen was absolutely sensational,” said Gale. “I think he’s probably the best centre-back we’ve had since Brede Hangeland. I don’t want to be disparaging about anyone else as we’ve had a lot of good defenders, but I just think this lad really is top drawer.”
“I know he’s only played 20-something games for us, but he’s been incredible in that time and a pivotal factor in our improvement in form. Things started to turn when he came into the side. He’s so good on the ball with his passing ability, but off the ball he’s great, too. He’s a leader,” he added.
Tottenham have had great success with Danes such as Christian Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Andersen could now be their next capture in an attempt to continue that success.
