According to the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace are interested in signing Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles this summer as they weigh up a fresh start.
A new manager could arrive at Selhurst Park with Roy Hodgson’s contract running down, and it’s stated that they want to sign five new players this summer to bolster their squad.
One of the targets is Maitland-Niles, with Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher also wanted after the pair impressed on loan at West Bromwich Albion this season.
The 23-year-old has been playing as a midfielder for the Baggies, the role he has wanted to play for some time having been cast as a right back at Arsenal in recent times.
The Telegraph claim that Maitland-Niles now accepts that he needs to leave Arsenal for good in search of first-team action, even if that means playing as a right back elsewhere.
Palace thought they had landed their right back of the future in Nathan Ferguson, but injury problems mean his season has been lost, but there is a chance that he is their right back and Maitland-Niles can play in midfield.
Staying in London may also be appealing to Maitland-Niles having spent most of his life in the capital, which is something Palace can offer; Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City can’t.
Arsenal’s asking price is likely to be at least £20million, and it remains to be seen whether Palace can come up with that kind of cash to lure Maitland-Niles down to Selhurst Park this summer.
