Despite a shaky start to life at Liverpool, it does now look like Ozan Kabak has been a cracking find by Michael Edwards.
The 21-year-old powerhouse joined the Reds on a half-season loan from Schalke in January due to the crisis of centre-back options that Jurgen Klopp had to contend with at the time.
And in spite of his age, Kabak, who only turned 21 last week, has posted some brilliant defensive displays in recent weeks, including in both Champions League wins over RB Leipzig.
Better yet, the Premier League champions could pick him up permanently for only £18 million, but if rumours are to be believed, Edwards might out-Edwards himself on this front.
The Liverpool sporting director is known to have an eye for a bargain and even at £18 million, Kabak would be one hell of a coup when you consider his age, combined with his ability and promise.
But David Ornstein revealed on The Athletic podcast this week that the Merseyside club will actually attempt to sign the Turkish powerhouse for less than that figure, due to the German club’s financial issues.
And if Liverpool do indeed secure a better deal than the one they had in January, well swathes of fans will be declaring ‘Edwards has done it again’ on Twitter – and they’d be right. Kind of.
Even for Edwards, this would be some feat but considering his track record, you wouldn’t bet against him.
