Arsenal were turned down by Eric Garcia, the Daily Star have reported.

Arsenal were keen to sign Garcia from Manchester City, when they realised that he was set to depart the Etihad Stadium.

However, it quickly became apparent that the young central defender had his eyes on a move elsewhere.

The Spaniard, who Pep Guardiola once labelled as ‘incredible (Goal), wanted to go to Barcelona and when Arsenal were told that Garcia was looking elsewhere they quickly pulled out of potential negotiations for the 20-year-old.

Garcia is a player who Mikel Arteta knows well, having worked with him at City, and missing out on him may have been a blow.

However, it does suggest that Arsenal may well be looking for a central defender in the summer.

The Gunners were unable to bring in a new centre-back in January, meaning they have had to keep the faith in what they have.

The likes of Gabriel, Rob Holding, Pablo Mari and David Luiz have all had their moments this season, but there is still a feeling that Arteta hasn’t quite settled upon a first choice defensive pairing, and finding a new centre-back could be one of his priorities in the summer – as evidenced by the club’s desire to sign Garcia.
