Riley Keough completes death doula training
Months after the death of her brother Benjamin, actress Riley Keough revealed that she completed a death doula training.
Taking to her Instagram profile on March 22nd, Riley shared a quote from poet and scholar Rumi which says: “Be a lamp or a lifeboat or a ladder. Help someone’s soul heal. Walk out of your house like a shepherd.”
In her caption, the actress explained:
“Today I finished my Death Doula training, on The Art of Death Midwifery training course by @sacred_crossings so I guess I’m an almost certified death doula now hehe. And I just felt like writing such a deep thank you to this community who are teaching and training people in conscious dying and death work.
“We are taught that its a morbid subject to talk about. Or were so afraid of it that we’re unable to talk about it… then of course it happens to us, and we are very ill prepared. I think it’s so important to be educated on conscious dying and death the way we educate ourselves on birth and conscious birthing.”
“So I’m so grateful for this community and to be able to contribute what I can,” Riley added.
What is a certified death doula?
A death doula is someone who assists a dying individual and their family during or after the death. They are people who provide physical, emotional, psychological, as well as spiritual support.
Those who want to become a death doula need to go through professional training in order to learn the principles of providing support services.
As Verywell Health notes “People from all walks of life can choose to become a death doula, including grief counselors, hospice personnel, social workers, healthcare professionals, members of the clergy, individuals who witnessed a transformative death experience personally.”
Meanwhile, a doula is also a professional who helps mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. They don’t have medical experience, instead, they are there to provide emotional and psychological guidance.
