Niall Ennis insists that leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers in January has proved to be the right decision after a fine start to life at Plymouth Argyle, as he told Plymouth Live.

There is a big difference between being a Premier League player and merely being contracted to a Premier League club.

While eyebrows might have been raised when Ennis swapped Wolves for a club in the middle of England’s third tier, sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward.

The Wolverhampton-born striker never made a top-flight appearance with his hometown club.

But he is already one of the first names on the team-sheet at Plymouth and, after a match-winning brace in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers, Argyle boss Ryan Lowe insisted that it was only a matter of time before this ‘special talent’ is climbing his way back to the top.

Just two months into his Plymouth career, a spell on the South Coast already looks like being the making of the former England U19 ace.

“I was at a Premier League club but it’s about being realistic with yourself,” Ennis reflected.

“I wasn’t a Premier League player, I was at a Premier League club. Sometimes you need to go somewhere to put you on a platform to get experience and learn.

“I feel like this is a great club to do that and I just need to kick on now.

“I have shown what I can do and it’s about just continuing to do that with consistency. I want to score goals and it’s about me getting in the right positions.

“I feel like recently my performances have been decent but the results haven’t been going well, so it was nice to get both (against Rovers).”

Perhaps Ennis felt that, if he wasn’t going to get a chance even when Raul Jimenez was injured and Fabio Silva was struggling, then an opportunity was never going to arrive at Wolves.

So far, the hard-working forward has scored five goals in ten starts at Plymouth.
