According to The Athletic, Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is ‘very upset’ having lost his chance to make the England squad.
It’s claimed that the England coaching staff had been in direct contact with Darlow to make it clear that he was in contention for a call-up.
However, Steve Bruce then decided to bench Darlow for the defeat to Manchester United on February 21st, and he hasn’t played since.
Martin Dubravka has won back his place in goal for Newcastle, and Darlow dropping back down to the bench meant England went in another direction.
West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone won the call-up instead, deputising for the injured Jordan Pickford during this international break.
Darlow is described as being ‘very upset’ having missed his chance to potentially play for England, with Johnstone now ahead of him in the pecking order.

Bruce dropping him was something of a surprise, and as the pressure continues to mount on the Newcastle boss, disappointing one of his own players certainly won’t help.
Darlow may now explore playing for Wales instead, with the goalkeeper seemingly accepting that his England dream now won’t come true.
