Jamie Carragher has claimed on Sky Sports that West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice was ‘like Mo Farah’ yesterday.
West Ham were penned back by Arsenal, after racing into a 3-0 lead in the contest, but Rice tried to turn the game back into his side favour.
Arsenal had come from behind to level the scores, with West Ham on the back foot in the last few minutes.
However, when Rice picked up the ball on the edge of his own box, he spotted an opportunity.
The England international burst forward, and just continued running past Arsenal defenders, as he carried the ball the length of the pitch.
Rice ultimately got a shot off, but was denied by Arsenal stopper Bernd Leno.
And Carragher was very impressed by the energy of the West Ham man so late on.
“He was like Mo Farah. Look at him bursting through, knocking people out the way and then it’s can he get a pass off? He can’t, so thinks might as well shoot I’ve gone this far. But massive credit to both sets of players,” Carragher said.
Rice’s driving run just shows how complete a midfielder he is.
The 22-year-old West Ham player is usually noted for his defensive qualities, but he really showed how he can break forward here.
Unfortunately for Rice he wasn’t able to cap off the run by scoring what would have been a goal of the season contender.
And West Ham were left thinking about what might have been, after seeing their advantage completely wiped out.
