Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that reported Tottenham Hotspur target Danny Ings should not leave Southampton.
The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has warned the ex-Liverpool striker that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
Merson has also suggested that the England international striker will leave, as he has not yet signed a new deal with Southampton.
According to Eurosport, Tottenham are interested in signing Ings from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer of 2021.
Merson wrote about Ings in The Daily Star: “Danny Ings might not be at Southampton for much longer but the grass is not always greener.
“His agent must have something lined up for him not to have signed a new contract – he’s losing money every week otherwise. But where would he go?
“I like Danny Ings. He’s a goalscorer, and his goals have kept Saints in the Premier League. I can understand him wanting to leave to play Champions League football – but only four teams will be able to offer him that.”
Leaving Southampton for Tottenham Hotspur?
Southampton are an established club in the Premier League, but the Saints are unlikely to finish in the European places anytime soon.
Ings earned the move to Liverpool because he is a quality striker, and now that he is back banging the goals and playing well for the Saints after an injury-plagued spell at Anfield, one can understand if the 28-year-old wants to leave for a bigger and ambitious club who will challenge for the Premier League title and/or play in the Champions League.
According to WhoScored, Ings has scored eight goals and provided three assists in the Premier League this season, and scored 22 goals and gave two assists in the league in 2019-20.
