The 2021 United Nations theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world’. The history of today

Before we delve into the quotes for the day, let’s have a look at the history behind today and what it means.

The first known International Women’s Day was in 1909 New York, when the Socialist Party of America organized a Women’s Day. Following on, German Delegates proposed at the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference that a Women’s Day should be organized annually.

In 1917, March 8th became a national holiday in Soviet Russia. Mainly, it was celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries. However, in the late 60s, the feminist movement encouraged it and in 1977, the United Nations began officially celebrating it.

It might be over 40 year since International Women’s Day became recognised by the United Nations, but it’s still just as necessary today, to show just how far we’ve come, but importantly, just how far we still have to go.

For some, the day is used to celebrate women and our achievements, but for others it’s a day of protest.
