Gini Wijnaldum has revealed that there is no news over his contract situation at Liverpool at the moment.

The Netherlands international is a few months away from leaving the Reds on a free transfer, with his existing deal expiring in June.

Liverpool have offered him a new deal but there seems to be an impasse in negotations right now.

But Wijnaldum was eligible to sign for any foreign club in the January transfer window and he failed to do so, which might indicate that he’s still in favour of staying at Anfield if they improve their terms.

The 30-year-old has played a massive role in Jurgen Klopp’s side winning the Champions League and Premier League over the last couple of years – and therefore Liverpool supporters are desperate to see him sign a new contract and stay on Merseyside.

But Wijnaldum, who joined the club in 2016 from Newcastle United, has insisted that there’s nothing to say at the moment, simply urging the fanbase to stay patient.

He told BeIN Sport: “If there’s nothing to say, if there’s no news, I cannot say something. I hope they [fans] will understand that and I hope they will stay patient until there’s news.”

In a lot of walks of life, no news is considered good news.

But in football, that isn’t really the case – and definitely not when your contract is expiring in a few months.

In this instance, no news is certainly bad news for Liverpool because the longer it goes, the more unlikely an extension is.
