Kevin Campbell has admitted that he cannot see Lucas Torreira returning to Arsenal this summer.
Torreira left the Gunners to join Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan in October, after his parent club signed Thomas Partey.
But it’s been a rotten stint in the Spanish capital for the Uruguay international, who cost Arsenal £27 million in 2018.
So far, the South American midfielder has only managed to start three league games under Diego Simeone and earned a total of just 613 minutes across all competitions.
There was even talk of the North Londoners recalling him in January and later selling him to Italian side Torino who were reportedly keen.
He enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign at Arsenal under Unai Emery – who played him as an attacking midfielder in his second season, to much criticism – and despite admitting that he was a ‘cracking little player’ once upon a time, Campbell can’t see any way back for him.
Asked by The Same Old Arsenal podcast if there’s any future at the Emirates for Torreira, Campbell shook his head and said: “Torreira didn’t settle. I think Torreira liked the club but his family didn’t settle and when that happens, you’re going to lose a player.
“I thought he was a cracking little player who was played out of position for whatever reason, but when they don’t settle, it’s a tough one.”
