Who is Joseph Stothert?
Joseph Stothert was the husband of the Mayor of Omaha, Jean Stothert.
The 72-year-old was a trauma surgeon and graduated with an MD from St. Louis University and a PhD in Pulmonary Physiology from the University of Washington, Seattle.
He also worked as a professor at the University of Nebraska’s Medical School in the Department of Surgery.
He was married to Nebraska Mayor Jean Stothert for over 40 years and they met when she was working as a nurse long before becoming Mayor.
Joseph Stothert was found dead on Friday
Joseph Stothert was found dead at his home on Friday (March 5th).
Police were called to the home just before 2pm to investigate reports of a shooting, and KETV reports that he died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds
Mayor Jean Stothert is safe and there is no foul play suspected.
The Stothert family released a statement to KETV
Following Joseph’s tragic death, his wife and family released a statement to KETV. They said:
“It is with great sadness today that we share the tragic loss of Joe Stothert with family, friends and our loving community. Joe’s dedication and affection for everyone he cared for serve as a bright light of human kindness for all of us to follow. Our family asks for your prayers at this very difficult time. We will need them. We also ask for privacy so our family may grieve and remember an extraordinary and caring husband, father and grandfather.”
