Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho has suggested to Football.London that Gareth Bale may not be fit enough to start against Fulham this week.
Bale, on loan from Spanish and European giants Real Madrid, scored twice and provided an assist in Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.
Spurs are back in action on Thursday evening when they take on Fulham in the London derby, and Mourinho has suggested that the Wales international winger may not start at Craven Cottage.
Mourinho told Football.London about Bale: “Day after day, day after day, and as I was saying, he is experienced and his knowledge of his body and his feelings are going to be fundamental.
“A player that gives me this kind of performance of course I want to play him on Thursday and on Sunday, and I want to play him next week against Dinamo Zagreb but I don’t think I can. I don’t think I can.
“So this is a process that we have to manage day by day and see how he feels tomorrow and see how he feels after tomorrow. He’s a very important part of this decision-making because he has a lot of experience.”
Taking it easy
Bale has had injury and fitness issues this season, and it would make sense for the winger and Spurs to take it easy.
True, Bale is in good form at the moment and is starting to score goals, but there needs to be understanding what he is capable of physically.
Fulham are in danger of getting relegation to the Championship at the end of the season, and although the Cottagers should not be taken lightly, Spurs have enough to get the better of them without Bale in the starting lineup.
According to WhoScored, Bale has scored three goals and provided two assists in the Premier League and has scored three goals and provided one assist in the Europa League for Spurs this season.
