Paul Scholes told Premier League Productions (28/02/21 at 9:40 pm) that Thiago Alcantara ‘hasn’t got the energy’ to play for Liverpool.

The Old Trafford legend also suggested that Liverpool’s summer signing is ‘more suited’ to play for Manchester United.

Thiago was in action for Liverpool on Sunday evening as Jurgen Klopp’s men recorded a much-needed three points against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United.

After the game, one of the Premier League’s great midfield players shared an interesting insight into Thiago’s game.

“I don’t think his performances have been outstanding or really bad the other way either,” said Scholes. “He’s a player for me who has to play centrally.

“The way Liverpool play with the three in midfield, I don’t think he has great legs about him, so that central role would suit him down to the ground. Once you are in a wider position in the three, it’s very difficult to get around the pitch because he’s not that type of player. He’s not someone who is going to be running out to a left-back. It’s just not his game.

“He just needs to be sat in the middle. Controlling things, bringing players into play and that’s what he’s good at – I just wonder if this way of playing that Liverpool play is suited to his style of football.

“He doesn’t seem a Jurgen Klopp type player, does he? You think of the midfield players he has got and the forward players. Everything is 100 miles per hour.

“I thought he would have been more suited to a Manchester United team. In a two in midfield with a holding player, really good strong defensive player, where he can sit and control games. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, I don’t see them controlling games. I see them going for the throat in teams. He hasn’t got that energy to really overpower midfield players.”

Prior to Thiago joining Liverpool for £20 million in the summer (Sky Sports), there was huge excitement around Merseyside about what he can bring to the table.

This Liverpool team that had just dominated English football had just added an extra spice to their game in the form of a European Cup winner from Bayern Munich.

But with Liverpool ravaged by injuries since Thiago’s arrival, his offensive qualities in the middle of the park haven’t shone through in a depleted team and his defensive issues have instead come through.
