It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Liverpool are going to be signing defenders this summer.
The Reds’ season has been ravaged by injuries to their centre-backs, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez sitting out since October, while Joel Matip, their only other recognised and senior central defender, was ruled out for the rest of the campaign last month.
This unprecedented crisis has led to Liverpool falling 19 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and given that Jurgen Klopp’s side are the reigning champions, it’s easy to see where their failure has stemmed from.
Centre-backs will be the order of the day for Klopp and Michael Edwards once the summer window opens – and if rumours are believed, the Anfield side want a very high-profile one.
According to Diario Madridista, Liverpool are keen to bring Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane to Merseyside
The report claims that the Premier League giants have joined Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in chasing the France international – who has a £433 million release clause – and adds that Klopp ‘loves’ the player.
Despite having a colossal release clause, Varane is only contracted to the Bernabeu club for another 18 months and therefore he wouldn’t cost anywhere near that amount, especially if Real try and fail to tie him down to a new deal.
