Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has raved about Daniel Ceballos, as quoted on Football.London.
Ceballos, on loan from Real Madrid, made two mistakes against Benfica which could have seen Arsenal lose the Europa League Round of 32 tie.
The 24-year-old Spain international midfielder gave away the free kick for Benfica’s first goal.
The Madrid-owned midfielder’s second error saw him head the ball straight into the path of Rafa Silva that led to Arsenal conceding the second goal.
Arsenal legend Martin Keown was far from impressed by Ceballos, but manager Arteta has praised the midfielder despite his errors, and has outlined how committed he is to the team by the way he celebrates every goal.
Arteta told Football.London: “I’m especially happy for Dani because he’s a player that lives this profession like it’s the most important thing in his life and when he made that mistake if that would have cost the team to be out of the competition it would have been mentally really tough.
“So, that’s when you need players in the team like we have like with Auba with Bukayo creating the situations, with KT scoring the goal to save him. Out of a difficult situation created a really bright moment.”
The Arsenal boss added: “Again I’m especially happy for him because he really loves this game and he does everything in the right way to be as prepared as possible. You can see how he celebrates every single goal. He doesn’t have a ten-year contract at the club, he’s on loan, and still feels and defends this club in the best possible way. I think someone like him deserves good things to happen to him in football.”
Ceballos will know that the mistake he made for the second Benfica goal was avoidable, but such errors happen with all footballers.
The 24-year-old has done well for Arsenal so far, and it is all part of the learning process.
It is encouraging that Arteta has defended Ceballos and has given him his support.
Ceballos should now work hard not to repeat the same mistakes and repay the faith that Arteta has in him.
