Arsenal, Leeds United and Celtic are among the clubs who have been linked with Josh Doig, but it seems that the Hibernian defender does not plan to go anywhere.

Goal.com reported in January 2021 that Leeds, Manchester City, Celtic and Arsenal are interested in signing the 18-year-old defender in the summer of 2021.

The report claimed that the left-back, who has established himself as a regular in the Hibernian first team, will cost £1 million.

Despite speculation that so many clubs are tracking him, Doig has decided to commit his future to Hibernian.

According to a statement on the Scottish Premiership club’s official website today, the 18-year-old has signed a new contract that will see him stay at the club until the summer of 2025 at least.

The defender is overjoyed to have signed a new deal and told Hibernian’s official website: “I’m grateful for the new contract and the club’s faith in me. This season’s gone better than I could have hoped for and it doesn’t seem that long ago that my family were with me at the training ground to sign my first professional contract.

“I owe the gaffer, the backroom staff and my team-mates a lot for giving me the opportunity to do what I love and for helping me whenever I’ve needed it.”

The teenager added: “I said when I signed the first professional contract that it was an important step, but it was only one step and the same applies to this one.

“I know what I want to improve on, and I want to do whatever it takes to stay in the team and make sure we have a strong finish to the season.”

Could a summer transfer still happen?

While it seems that Hibernian do not plan to cash in on Doig at the end of the season, the fact of the matter is that money talks.

What Hibs have done by extending the youngster’s contract is that they have made it clear to interested clubs that they will have to pay good money to sign him.

Arsenal, Leeds and Celtic could still sign Doig at the end of the season, but they will have to pay decent transfer fee for him.

According to WhoScored, Doig has made 19 starts and two substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership so far this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the process.
