Arsenal fans have been left fearing that Willian will start for them on Sunday against Leicester City now, after Mikel Arteta praised him following their win over Benfica last night.
Willian came off the bench for Arsenal when the Gunners were trailing 2-1 in the tie, and it is fair to see that his introduction wasn’t welcomed with open arms by Gunners supporters on social media.
Willian silenced his critics by putting in a solid display from the bench though.
The Brazilian set-up Kieran Tierney to score for Arsenal, as they turned their game around against Benfica and won 3-2.
Arteta was quick to praise Willian’s impact on the game at full-time, saying to Football London: “With Willian especially, I think he changed the game. He gave us much more composure in moments, produced some creativity, produced the goal for Kieran and we need everybody on board.”
But Arsenal fans are best pleased with the comments, as they feel that Willian may get put back into their starting line-up.
Willian has made very little positive impact at Arsenal since arriving in the summer, but he does seem to be a player who Arteta trusts.
It was noticeable that Arsenal turned to him rather than Nicolas Pepe as they chased the game last night.
At the time that looked a questionable decision, but given the turnaround in Arsenal’s fortunes Arteta will surely feel he made the right call.
