Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford has revealed that he praised Southampton to their goalkeeper Alex McCarthy on Tuesday night.
While speaking to the Leeds United podcast, Bamford revealed that Southampton actually caught Leeds by surprise during the game.
The Saints tried to press Leeds throughout the first half, and the game was actually closer than the scoreline suggested.
The Whites arguably edged things as the match progressed – but 3-0 did slightly flatter them.
And Bamford revealed that he was positive about Southampton’s performance to McCarthy at full time.
“I think part of it was Southampton,” he said. “They really did first 20 minutes go full throttle.
“I was speaking to their keeper after, because I knew him from when I was at Palace, and I was saying I’ve not seen another team come here and really press. They really did go for it and I was surprised by that.”
McCarthy may not have been in the best of moods when Bamford spoke to him, as he hardly covered himself in glory during the game.
McCarty was beaten by a late free-kick by Raphinha, which he really should have saved.
Bamford also found a way past the Southampton man, as Leeds picked up an important three points.
