Toni Kroos believes reported Liverpool target David Alaba is capable of shining at Real Madrid – but warns the Bayern Munich star playing for Los Blancos brings a unique set of challenges.
Is there a more demanding fanbase in world football than the merciless Madridistas?
As Iker Casillas, Gareth Bale and even Cristiano Ronaldo will tell you, Real supporters aren’t afraid to make their feelings known when they’re unhappy with your performance.
We’d imagine if there’s one player secretly glad of the ongoing absence of fans from the terraces, it’s the ailing Eden Hazard.
So with Alaba potentially set to follow in Kroos’ footsteps with a move from Munich to Madrid, a man who has won pretty much all there is to win may be about to face his biggest challenge yet.
“Here you need quality – that you are physically there, that your head can handle many situations. You need more than just sporting quality,” Kroos, whose enduring consistency has kept him on the good side of the Madridistas during the past eight years, tells Sky Germany.
“If you’re a regular at Bayern, you definitely have the athletic quality to play at Real Madrid – that’s clear. But we’ll see what will come of it in the end.”
The Bernabau may be his most likely destination but Liverpool haven’t given up hope yet of reuniting Alaba with former Allianz Arena teammate Thiago Alcantara next season (ESPN).
And while the Liverpool faithful are a demanding bunch themselves, it’s not the done thing on Merseyside to whistle and boo your own players. Some Real Madrid fans could learn a thing or two.
ESPN adds that Alaba, who confirmed his departure from Bayern earlier this month, wants a £400,000-a-week deal at his next club.
