David Weir has praised Everton defender Ben Godfrey on Football Pass.

The former Everton central defender has been impressed by the performances of Godfrey so far this season.

Weir has said that the 23-year-old has exceeded expectations at Goodison Park and is pleased to see him step up his game following his move to the Merseyside club last summer.

Godfrey joined Everton from Norwich City in the summer of 2020 for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £20 million.

Weir said about Godfrey on Football Pass: “He has really stepped up to the plate. We all knew he was a good player, I think, when Everton signed him and had high hopes, but I think he exceeded those expectations by the level of his performance, both in central defence and also in full-back positions as well.”

Important player for Everton

Godfrey played well for Everton against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at the weekend and has established himself as an important player in manager Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

According to WhoScored, the 23-year-old has made 16 starts and one substitute appearance in the league for the Merseyside club so far this season, providing one assist in the process.

Everton are doing well at the moment and could end up in the top four of the Premier League this season.

A big reason why the Toffees are doing so well right now is the performance of Godfrey at the back.
